Explore the history of Ipswich through the eyes of Thomas Wolsey.

In the year of Thomas Wolsey's 550th birthday, Ipswich will be retelling his stories during a 550-day programme of events, exhibitions and workshops that aim to inspire local people with his rags-to-riches life.

The Thomas Wolsey 550 project began in March 2023 to recognise and celebrate the 550th anniversary of the birth of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (1473-1530); a baker's son from Ipswich who became the right-hand man of King Henry VIII, and therefore one of the country's most influential figures. Wolsey was quite simply, a master of opportunity. His achievements, which shaped politics, law and religion, and therefore everyday life, in this country illustrates that anything is possible for anyone.
