September is here, and Ipswich is packed with plenty to keep you busy as we head into autumn. Whether you’re a massive ITFC fan, love a bit of local history, or are just looking for something fun to do with the family on the weekend, there is loads happening across town this month. We’ve got new street art celebrating our Premier League return, free historic venue tours, rare art exhibitions, and plenty of live shows.
Here is your quick guide to what’s coming up around Ipswich this month and into early October!
A new community mural is now in place in Princes Street, to celebrate Ipswich Town playing in the Premier League this season! Have you seen it?
If you’re a local history lover, Heritage Open Days (11 – 20 September) see many historic buildings in Ipswich open their doors for free tours and events celebrating the history and heritage of the town. Why not plan a visit and learn more about places of interest in Ipswich?
And, a reminder that The Hay Wain can only be found in Christchurch Mansion until 4 October, so if you haven’t yet made it to see Constable’s masterpiece on display right here in Suffolk, book soon before it returns to London.

Visit Ipswich heritage buildings for FREE as part of Heritage Open Days 2026. There are loads to see including inside The Ancient House, Heritage Harbour at Ipswich Waterfront, Ipswich Minster and many more.
Between 11am and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, Ipswich Waterfront is the place to be for a FREE to enjoy celebration at the Heritage Harbour on Ipswich Waterfront hosted by Ipswich Maritime Trust.
More Than Words sees 50 events across 11 local venues including author talks, book signings, writing workshops, spoken word performances plus activities for children – something for everyone!
Organised by the wonderful independent shops in The Walk, this regular market of local independent traders is vastly becoming a popular trip out for a Sunday mooch, the next one is a Fantasy and Gamers Market, 10am to 4pm on 4 October.
A reminder that only until 4 October, a very special Constable 250 exhibition featuring The Hay Wain remains on display (on loan from London) with a number of John Constable’s other significant landscape paintings. Tickets are £10 for adults, under 16’s FREE.
As we head into the start of Autumn, there are loads of great theatre shows coming up in town – including Calendar Girls at the New Wolsey Theatre, Anglia Comedy All Stars at Ipswich Corn Exchange and Chris Ramsey at Ipswich Regent Theatre.
Whether you’re spending an afternoon admiring world-class artwork at Christchurch Mansion, strolling through historic streets during Heritage Open Days, or taking in a live comedy show on the weekend, Ipswich is full of energy this autumn.
