Step into the future of connection with the Portal, the UK’s first public art sculpture that visually connects Ipswich to other Portal cities and countries worldwide in real time.
Situated on Cornhill, the Portal is live daily from 6 am to 11pm and uses live-streaming video technology to connect global communities. It enables people in Ipswich to see, wave, and interact in real time with others thousands of miles away.
The art sculpture is part of Digital Ipswich, a Town’s Fund programme delivered by Ipswich Borough Council. Created by Lithuanian artist and entrepreneur Benediktas Gylus, the Portal contributes to the town’s investment in digital innovation. It helps attract visitors, support local businesses, and showcase Ipswich as a forward-thinking, connected community.
The Portal switches on its window to the world at 6am daily and turns off at 11pm each night.
Outside these times it will show a blank screen so please do not worry that its broken!
Its feed rotates between all the other locations, with more arriving all the time, so spending some time viewing the changing images will take you around the world.
We’re sure everyone will behave perfectly, but there is CCTV covering the Portal to make sure that we’re always showing the best of Ipswich to the rest of the world.
Current connection: Dublin (Ireland), Vilnius (Lithuania), Lublin (Poland), Philadelphia (USA).
Future connections: Manila (Philippines), Barre Grande (Brazil) and other international locations coming soon.
