Workhouses and social history: understanding records and building a research plan (online course)

Monday 19th October - Monday 16th November

7pm-8pm at The Hold

Five-week online course starting 19 October. Explore the history of Suffolk’s workhouses through original records with Julie Johnson. The course introduces the realities of poor relief and the people who experienced it. You will learn how to work with parish and workhouse material, from admissions and discharges to other key records, and how to interpret what they reveal. A key focus is turning these fragments into a clear, evidence-based account of an individual’s life within the workhouse system. Ideal for family and local historians, this course will help you move from documents to a grounded and carefully constructed life story.  There will be the opportunity to have a tour of the archives.
