Creating Constable

A celebration of works by Suffolk-born landscape painter, John Constable

One of the great landscape painters of British art history, John Constable was prolific painter and drawer who created atmospheric works capturing everyday, rural life in Suffolk and Essex, providing the Dedham Vale AONB's nickname: 'Constable Country'.

This unique exhibition marks the 200th anniversary of Constable's most famous painting, The Hay Wain, one of the most popular English paintings depicting Willy Lott's Cottage in East Bergholt. Creating Constable will explore the early Suffolk influences and personal friendships that created Constable the artist; revealing the important untold stories of Suffolk artists, local collectors and early supporters who provided Constable with the foundations on which to build a career.
