St Mary-at-stoke Chruch is an Anglican Church, which benefited from the Midas touch of William Butterfield, the Victorian gothic Revival architect who enlarged it in 1870/1. The site has origins which pre-date the Saxon era during which time Stoke (Saxon for stockade) was a fortified hill, cut off from the rest of the town by water and marshes.
