Jerwood Dancehouse is DanceEast's new permanent home at the former Cranfields Mill site on the regenerated Ipswich Waterfront. The Jerwood DanceHouse was designed by John Lyall Architects and officially opened with a weekend of celebrations on Saturday 10 October 2009.
An inspiration for the architect, John Lyall and developers Wharfside regeneration, was the image of the white lighthouse, typical of the East Anglia coast. The tower, with its white façade and accents of brightly coloured render reflected in the water, is also an echo of the traditional lighthouse that Lyall became familiar with during family holidays spent at Southwold. 'The building had to respond to the acres of air and water in front of it,' he explains.
